Security Tips

Keeping a step ahead of Internet fraud

From an article in The Southland Times 06-Nov-2003 by Glynn Hardy.

  • Know who you are dealing with.
  • Always access Internet Banking by typing the address into your web browser. If in doubt, contact SBS Bank separately on an advertised number.
  • Don't reply to ANY email that requests your personal information.
  • Be suspicious of ANY email from a business or person that asks for your password, pin number or other highly sensitive information.
  • Open emails only when you know the sender.
  • Be especially careful about opening an email with an attachment. Even a friend may accidentally send an email with a virus.
  • Be careful before clicking on a link contained in an email or other message. The link may not be trustworthy.
  • Do not send sensitive personal or financial information unless it is encrypted on a secure website. Regular emails are not encrypted and are more like sending a post card.
  • Look for the padlock symbol on the bottom bar of the browser to ensure the site is running in secure mode before entering sensitive information.
  • Use strong passwords or pin numbers for your internet account.
  • Choose passwords that are difficult for others to guess, and use a different password for each of your accounts.
  • Use both letters and numbers and a combination of lower case and capital letters if the passwords or pins are case sensitive.
  • Keep hold of your cash. Don't be conned by convincing emails offering you the chance to make some easy money. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Be especially wary of unsolicited emails from outside of New Zealand.
  • Keep your PC secure. Use up-to-date anti-virus software, security patches and a personal firewall.
  • Be extra careful if using internet cafes or a PC which is not your own and over which you have no control.
  • Familiarise yourself with SBS Bank's website. Often it's a good place for guidance on how to stay safe online.
  • Check your periodical statements. If you notice anything irregular, contact us immediately.
