Security Tips
Keeping a step ahead of internet fraud
From an article in the Southland Times 06-Nov-2003 by Glynn Hardy
- Know who you are dealing with.
- Always access Internet Banking by typing the address into your web browser. If in doubt, contact SBS separately on an advertised number.
- Don't reply to ANY e-mail that requests your personal information.
- Be suspicious of ANY e-mail from a business or person that asks for your password, pin number or other highly sensitive information.
- Open e-mails only when you know the sender.
- Be especially careful about opening an e-mail with an attachment. Even a friend may accidentally send an e-mail with a virus.
- Be careful before clicking on a link contained in an email or other message. The link may not be trustworthy.
- Do not send sensitive personal or financial information unless it is encrypted on a secure website. Regular emails are not encrypted and are more like sending a post card.
- Look for the padlock symbol on the bottom bar of the browser to ensure the site is running in secure mode before entering sensitive information.
- Use strong passwords or pin numbers for your internet account.
- Choose passwords that are difficult for others to guess, and use a different password for each of your accounts.
- Use both letters and numbers and a combination of lower case and capital letters if the passwords or pins are case sensitive.
- Keep hold of your cash. Don't be conned by convincing e-mails offering you the chance to make some easy money. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
- Be especially wary of unsolicited e-mails from outside of New Zealand.
- Keep your PC secure. Use up-to-date anti-virus software, security patches and a personal firewall.
- Be extra careful if using internet cafes or a PC which is not your own and over which you have no control.
- Familiarise yourself with SBS' website. Often it's a good place for guidance on how to stay safe online.
- Check your periodical statements. If you notice anything irregular, contact us immediately.
