SBS Bank and the Environment
At a time when environmental sustainability is a common term, SBS Bank is delighted to have become a corporate member of the Southland Sustainable Business Network. By completing the 'Quick Steps' sustainable business programme, and exploring ongoing energy efficiency and recycling opportunities, we're proud to do our part in bolstering the sustainability of our day-to-day business operation and, in turn, improving the quality of our precious environment.
We were proud to be a finalist for the Commercial Award for the 2009 Environment Awards through Environment Southland.
Recycling
All cardboard, computer systems and ink cartridges used at SBS Bank head office and our retail branches is recycled to minimise wastage.
Energy
The SBS Bank Head Office building has been designed to enhance energy efficiency which is being constantly monitored and managed. This has included the reduction in energy consumption through the improved efficiency of the head office hot water circulation system.
In addition, the installation of energy efficient lighting which uses significantly less power than regular lighting and the directive to staff to conserve power has reduced the unnecessary use of electricity.
SBS Bank head office air conditioning system has also been ungraded to effectively manage the system, reducing power consumption by some 20%.
Electronic Methods of Data Handling
Bank statements are available electronically from SBS Bank with statement suppression provided as an option via SBS Internet Banking, reducing the number of paper statements sent each month. This facility is available to customers with transactional accounts (without a loan facility).

Our Goals for the Future
Our goals for the future include an increased focus on the amount of fuel used in our company cars, encouraging car pooling, researching methods to conserve energy and being able to recycle all recyclable materials used.
